The Parish Priest of Christ the King Church in Rukungiri Municipality, Rev. Fr. John Vianney Byaruhanga, has called on believers to prioritize hard work if they are to live meaningful and fulfilling lives.

While delivering Mass at Christ the King Parish in Kabale Diocese, Fr. Vianney emphasized that work is not only a biblical command but also a path to dignity, independence, and prosperity. Citing Scripture that states “whoever does not work should not eat,” he expressed concern over the increasing number of people who shun work and later blame poverty for their hardships, despite God entrusting humanity with the earth for sustenance.

Fr. Vianney urged parents to take responsibility in instilling a strong work ethic in their children. He noted that laziness among the youth largely stems from poor upbringing, where parents rely heavily on housemaids and fail to teach their children basic skills or the value of work.

He warned that failure to train children in practical tasks exposes them to future embarrassment and dependency, encouraging parents to actively participate in preparing their children for a productive life.

The priest also raised concern over housewives who choose not to engage in any form of work, depending entirely on their husbands for their needs. He said such habits slow down family and national development.

Fr. Vianney commended the Government of Uganda for introducing the new lower secondary school curriculum, saying it is playing a key role in combating laziness among learners. He called on school heads to embrace the curriculum and ensure students gain hands-on skills that will secure their future.

Among the congregants was the headteacher of St. Joseph’s Secondary School Rushasha in Nyakagyeme Sub-county. Speaking during the service, he affirmed that the new curriculum is equipping learners with practical skills. He revealed that students are now actively involved in activities such as baking, agriculture, building and construction, and tailoring, which are shaping them into hardworking and self-reliant citizens.
