Police in Rukungiri are investigating a series of fatalities linked to poisonous alcoholic drinks in the district.

In an interview with our reporter, Rukungiri District Police Commander (DPC) Kyangungu Apollo revealed that in the past week, four bodies have been discovered across different areas of the district. These individuals showed no visible injuries. Postmortem reports indicate that their deaths were caused by the consumption of toxic alcohol.

Apollo explained that they are now actively working to raise awareness about the dangers of consuming ethanol, which has proven to be harmful and deadly. He stated that efforts are underway to visit villages, parishes, and sub-counties to educate residents on how to protect themselves from these dangerous substances.

He noted that some individuals are consuming cheap ethanol produced by unscrupulous traders, who use harmful ingredients such as spirits, drugs like Mijaj, and medications like Panadol.

Wednesday Twinomujuni, the LC3 Chairperson for Nyakishenyi Sub-County, confirmed that harmful ethanol is also prevalent in his area. Despite his efforts to curb its consumption, including involving local security officials, his attempts have been undermined due to non-compliance.

He commended the Rukungiri DPC for addressing this issue and pledged to support the campaign against harmful ethanol in Nyakishenyi Sub-County.

Jolly Mashaija, the Women’s Council Chairperson for Rukungiri District, emphasized the urgent need for public education. She noted that excessive alcohol consumption is affecting both men and women, leading to decreased productivity, domestic violence, and increased poverty as household incomes are being diverted to alcohol.

She stressed that addressing these issues is crucial for the overall development and well-being of the community.
