The Territorial Police in Rukungiri have taken into custody one Wyclif Amumpaire, who is accused of stealing and vandalizing electrical materials, causing losses to the government.
Amumpaire was arrested today at Rwabuteneka Trading Center in Kagashe Ward, Eastern Division of Rukungiri Municipality, where he was reportedly found climbing an electricity pole.
The arrest followed tips from local traders, who alerted Alex Asiimwe, Manager of the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) Rukungiri branch, and the police.
Speaking about the incident, Mr. Asiimwe commended traders for reporting suspicious activities and warned the public to remain vigilant against individuals impersonating UEDCL workers. “The arrest has begun, and we urge everyone to report any person tampering with electricity. This will help prevent further losses to the government,” he said.
Detective Onesmus Kamugisha, OC CID Rukungiri, confirmed the arrest, noting that the suspect is currently under investigation and will be presented in court to serve as an example.
Some traders at Rwabuteneka Trading Center, who wished to remain anonymous, identified the suspect as their electrician, raising concerns about the misuse of trust in the community.
Authorities have called on the public to remain vigilant and report any incidents of electricity theft to help safeguard public resources.
