The Deputy Resident District Commissioner (DRDC) for Rukungiri, Wilberforce Ongom Ahimbisibwe, has asked government to retain the Micro Scale Irrigation Scheme to enhance food security and income among farmers.

He made the call today, Thursday 25th September 2025, while officiating at the evaluation of the Micro Scale Irrigation Scheme program, which is phasing out on 31st December 2025, and the awards of best performers of Rukungiri District, including civil workers, service providers, and farmers, at the District headquarters. The event was organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries.

Rukungiri District was ranked number one Micro Scale Irrigation Scheme program implementer, scoring 100% among the beneficiary districts. It was topped by Kebisoni Town Council, followed by Buyanja Sub County among the sub-counties, receiving countrywide benchmarking appreciated by the Ministry with certificates of recognition and awards.

Ongom assured that agriculture among the beneficiaries had been transformed, sustaining quality and quantity production irrespective of season and adoption of mechanization. He therefore asked government to retain the program for modernized agriculture, which is the backbone of the country.

Engineer Tondo James Kasozi from the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries commended Rukungiri District for serving as exemplary in the country and urged them to prepare thoroughly the not-yet-benefited applicants for the soon-to-be-released 7 billion closing funds.

Hajj Masokoyi Swalikh Wasswa, the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) for Rukungiri, praised the Production Department for making Rukungiri shine and implored them to advance into training investments of the outputs to help farmers sustain wealth.

Adrine Keshasha Turyabe, Chris Nankwatsa, and Bernard Turyakira, the beneficiaries of the program, expressed gratitude for the climate-resilient farming and quality production.
