Residents of Kashanda and Kagugu sub-counties in Rushenyi County, Ntungamo District, have expressed frustration over the delayed completion of a National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) project intended to supply clean water to their communities.
The project, which commenced in 2020, involved digging trenches and laying pipes from Kajara along the Kanyampumo–Kashanda road to Nyanga. While the same project has already been completed and operational in parts of Kajara for over eight months, the Rushenyi section has remained incomplete since its reception in 2021.
Residents say they had high hopes that the initiative would ease access to clean water, but the prolonged delay has forced them to continue trekking long distances to fetch water — a particular burden for the elderly. They also pointed to inadequate electricity supply, noting that the area’s transformer is too weak to serve the entire parish.
Local leaders confirm that the project has been stalled for about four years and attribute its implementation to NWSC under the directive of the Rushenyi County Member of Parliament. District authorities, however, say the project is solely under NWSC’s mandate and was not included in the district budget, advising residents to follow up with their MP.
Efforts to contact Rushenyi County MP Hon. Naome Kabasharira for a comment were unsuccessful, as her known telephone numbers went unanswered.
