The director of the World Wide Fund a non-government organization Ivan Tumuhimbise has challenged people in Rukungiri to prioritize tree planting and support all programs aimed at fighting against deforestation as a way of conserving the environment.
He said this yesterday in a one-day workshop held at Kagogo timber yard in the western division of Rukungiri municipality that was aimed at tipping tree growers and timber traders on value addition and how to maintain forests for survival.
Ivan said that the worldwide fund is highly committed to supporting nature and fighting against all deals that can lead to environmental degradation.
He therefore challenged members of the Rukungiri Tree Growers and Timber Traders Association to have a hand in conserving the environment.
Auther Twinonujuni the Rukungiri district forestry officer said as authorities they are doing whatever it takes to fight deforestation in Rukungiri noting that many people are showing up for tree planting.
He challenged people in Rukungiri to focus on planting indigenous tree species as a way of maintaining nature.
Gideon Ntuguraa the chairperson for the Rukungiri tree growers and timber traders association hailed the worldwide fund for the support of a timber yard at Kagogo which he said will support the development of tree growers.
He said, as members of this association, they are looking forward growing indigenous tree species in Rukungiri and that they will at all times have a hand in environmental conservation.
