The Rukungiri District Water Officer Twekwase Deus has attributed the prevailing water crisis in some areas to the consumers who fail to maintain water sources.
This was on Tuesday contained in his address at the one-day workshop organized by the Rukungiri District production Department to overview the updates and changes in guidelines made in the Micro Scale Irrigation program where Rukungiri District is leading in performance across the country.
Since the program was introduced in Rukungiri District, 816 farmers have applied to benefit whereas 682 have benefited under the co-funding system paying 25 percent of the cost of the equipment applied for whereas the government pays 75 percent.
Deus noted that in Rukungiri District, the capacity of water coverage in Urban areas is equivalent to 92 percent whereas 84 percent in rural areas should sustain the population noting that the crisis is brought about by the failure to maintain water sources and pay bills among other challenges.
The Rukungiri District Secretary for Production, Marketing, and Natural Resources Byarugaba Michael who represented the Chairperson LCV cautioned people to avoid vandalizing water equipment and misusing water.
The Rukungiri District Senior Agricultural Engineer Ahumuza Alfred expressed gratitude saying that the corporation exhibited by farmers has enabled Rukungiri to lead other districts in Micro Scale Irrigation program fund utilization.
He revealed that a total of 1.2 billion shillings have so far been invested in the program.
