Relief items worth Uganda shillings Six million were yesterday handed over to students of Kyamakanda Senior Secondary School in Rukungiri district who lost their belongings in a fire that destroyed a dormitory at the school on 17th February 2023.
The relief items which include 54 suitcases and 25 cartons of counter books were donated by Buyanja My Roots an open-entry membership association of over 1,000 active members who are born or raised in Buyanja Subcounty Rukungiri District.
The group also contributed building materials towards the reconstruction of the affected dormitory
The fire that destroyed the dormitory is believed to have been set by an unknown arsonist when the students were attending night prep.
Speaking during the handover ceremony that was held at school premises, Mr. Benjamin Kwikiriza the chairperson Buyanja My Roots Rukungiri chapter who led the team said that they intervened to help parents and students who are currently facing an economic crisis and cannot easily replace the lost items.
Benjamin called upon students to be disciplined and avoid strikes if they are to be successful.
Kwikiriza assured students that if well used, the donated items will help them to catch up academically and perform well.
Mutungyisa Kennedy a member and assistant coordinator of Buyanja My roots Social scheme on other well-wishers to come to the aid of students who lost their belongings.
Mrs. Joy Kagambo the vice chairperson Kyamakanda Secondary School Board of Governors told students to use the donated items to work hard for academic excellence .
