Utility company UMEME is to spend about Ugx 2 billion) towards the improvement of power reliability and quality of supply for customers in Ishaka, Mitooma and Rukungiri districts.
The rehabilitation works will involve replacing over 700 poles across the line, wire conductors and installation of auto reclosers which will help to contain and single out faults on the network, thereby enhancing power supply reliability.
The works will also involve extending the line to connect more households in Katerampungu, Rutooma and Rweibare in Kati Parish Kanyabwanga sub-county in Mitooma district.
In his remarks, the Managing Director UMEME Selestino Babungi noted that this follows an outcry from businesses owners and other government facilities on the need for reliable power, and with government approval, they decided to rehabilitate the entire line from Ishaka to Rukungiri through Mitooma.
He asked the locals to use the power by starting up income-generating activities that will attract development to the area.
Speaking at the launch of the Multi-billion project at Katerampungu catholic church, Thomas Tayebwa the deputy speaker of Parliament who is also the member of parliament for Ruhinda North asked the locals to desist from illegal connections and approach officials from UMEME about powered-related issues.
