Traders in Rukungiri have expressed frustration over sluggish business as schools reopen, citing low sales compared to previous seasons.

Brian Mugarura, a businessman in Rukungiri, stated that customer turnout has been lower than expected, making it a challenging season for traders.

Speaking to our reporter, Peace Tugume, a wholesale shop owner in Rukungiri, highlighted the issue of price fluctuations, which have discouraged customers from purchasing goods. She noted that unpredictable price changes make it difficult for businesses to plan, and many customers are struggling with low incomes, further affecting sales.

Hamfrey Akatwijuka, the operations manager at Guild Stationery in Rukungiri, pointed out that while stationery sales used to be high, increasing competition has made business more challenging. He explained that many customers now prefer wholesale shops, believing they offer lower prices than stationery stores. He emphasized the need for businesses to stock up in advance to meet customer demand during peak seasons.

Meanwhile, Rukungiri Municipality Deputy Officer in Charge of Traffic, Corporal Daniel Latimer, cautioned passenger vehicle owners against overloading and urged them to adhere to road safety regulations. He stated that mobile patrols are in place, and offenders will face penalties.

He also advised parents to be cautious about whom they entrust with their children’s transportation, particularly boda boda riders, warning against overloading to ensure the safety of young passengers.
