A self-proclaimed prophet from Rwanda, Fred Ssindebwa, is set to be deported following his involvement in a controversial spiritual ritual in Kisoro District, Uganda, which has sparked concerns over cross-border religious practices and the exploitation of grieving families.

The incident, which unfolded on Easter Monday in Kanyenka Village, Muramba Sub County, saw Ssindebwa perform a questionable spiritual investigation at the invitation of Rev. Harrison Kwizera, the Parish Priest of Karago Church of Uganda in Kabami Archdeaconry, Diocese of Muhabura. The two, along with Rev. Kwizera’s brother Herbert Tumushime, were arrested after conducting a ritual meant to uncover the spiritual cause behind the death of their father, the late Rev. Erasmus John Majambere.

The ritual involved digging a hole inside the house where Ssindebwa claimed a snake tied to the mystery of Majambere’s death would appear. The snake was later killed by the family, contrary to the “prophet’s” instructions.

Following the ritual, Emmanuel Nkurunziza’s 15-year-old daughter reportedly began showing signs of spiritual affliction, raising alarms and prompting legal action.

Local church leaders have condemned the act, accusing Rev. Kwizera of compromising Christian values and exposing the community to spiritual danger.

Kisoro District Police Commander, Ben Niwamanya Kashumbusha, confirmed that Ssindebwa will be deported and warned against cross-border manipulation disguised as religious practice.

The incident has sparked debate on how spiritual practices are monitored and the responsibilities of religious leaders in guarding the faith and psychological wellbeing of their congregants.
