Health experts in Rukungiri District have raised concern over the increasing cases of Halitosis, commonly known as bad breath, urging the public to take oral hygiene seriously.

According to Alban Natukunda, the Rukungiri District Health Educator, Halitosis can result from various causes, notably poor dental hygiene such as failure to brush teeth regularly. He pointed out that the consumption of alcohol without immediate cleaning, passive smoking, and underlying health conditions like allergies also contribute to the condition.

Natukunda warned that Halitosis can lead to complications such as tonsillitis — an inflammation of the tonsils — and can also affect one’s social life, leading to isolation and rejection by peers.

He advised the public to always brush their teeth after every meal or after consuming anything that could cause bad breath, in order to prevent the onset of Halitosis.

Meanwhile, Dr. Annet Namara from Kadoth Clinics emphasized that in addition to poor oral hygiene, the consumption of foods like garlic and onions, smoking tobacco, and drinking alcohol are major contributors to bad breath. She also noted that certain medical conditions including ulcers, cancer, and infections like gum disease can worsen Halitosis.

Dr. Namara urged individuals to avoid habits that cause bad breath and to practice regular dental hygiene, especially after consuming odor-causing foods. She added that Halitosis can affect one’s confidence, social interactions, and even appetite. She encouraged anyone experiencing persistent bad breath to seek medical attention.

The health experts’ advice comes as part of ongoing efforts to improve public awareness on personal hygiene and prevent related health complications.
