Rukungiri District Council has approved a UGX 62.5 billion budget for the 2025/2026 financial year, signaling a renewed commitment to socio-economic transformation and improved service delivery across the district.
The budget, representing a 0.6% increase from the previous year, was passed during the district’s final council session held at the district headquarters on Tuesday. Vice Chairperson Santurina Nahwera, who presented the budget on behalf of the Secretary for Finance, Planning, and Administration Hon. Gideon Ntungura, outlined the district’s focus on human capital development, infrastructure, agro-industrialization, tourism, and digital transformation.
Of the total budget, UGX 59.5 billion will be sourced from central government transfers, with the remainder expected from local revenue, donors, and conditional grants. More than UGX 41.8 billion has been allocated to human capital development—particularly education, health, and social services—underscoring the district’s emphasis on building a healthier and more educated population.
Key education projects in the new fiscal year include the construction of additional classrooms at Bikurungu Centenary Primary School and Rwamagaya Primary School, alongside planned renovations and upgrades of several other institutions. These efforts aim to improve learning environments and boost education outcomes across the district.
Beyond education, the budget outlines strategic investments in agro-industrialization and natural resource management, aimed at creating employment opportunities and promoting environmental sustainability. Infrastructure development and digital transformation are also high on the district’s agenda, as Rukungiri seeks to modernize services and enhance economic potential.
Speaking at the council meeting, Vice Chairperson Nahwera stressed the importance of stakeholder involvement and community participation in achieving the district’s goals. She called on all residents to play an active role in the development process.
Resident District Commissioner Mr. Bewayo Stephen praised the council for its dedication and urged continued unity and cooperation, especially as the district gears up for the upcoming political season.
