Rukungiri District has joined the rest of the world to mark International Labour Day, with leaders expressing growing concern over the increasing number of early retirements, especially in the education sector.

Speaking during the district-level observance, Rukungiri District Chairperson Geoffrey Kyomukama challenged employers to improve workplace environments to retain skilled workers. He emphasized that mistreatment and denial of salaries or wages are key factors behind workers losing morale and opting for early exits from public service.

Kyomukama also encouraged workers across sectors—both government and private—to be faithful and produce quality work, adding that embracing value addition, even in service-related roles, could enhance productivity and satisfaction.

Chief Administrative Officer Hajj Swaliki Masokoi Wasswa echoed Kyomukama’s sentiments, revealing that Rukungiri has seen a surge in early retirement requests, particularly among primary school teachers. He noted that more than 20 teachers apply for early retirement annually, a trend that negatively affects service delivery in education.

Despite these challenges, Masokoi praised the district’s efforts, highlighting that Rukungiri was ranked 8th nationally in the last financial year for hard work, proper fund usage, and effective implementation of government programs. However, he appealed to the central government to address issues such as inadequate transport and poor working conditions that continue to hinder staff performance.

Meanwhile, Resident District Commissioner Steven Nsubuga Bewayo used the occasion to condemn child labour, urging Ugandans to prioritize children’s rights and ensure they are kept in school.

In the education sector, concerns were also raised by Byarugaba Henry, the head teacher of Nyakibale Lower, who criticized salary disparities between science and arts teachers. He said this gap creates frustration and pushes many educators to resign.

While Uganda’s national Labour Day celebration took place in Nakapiripirit District, RDC Nsubuga assured that Rukungiri will hold its own local celebration soon.
