President Yoweri Museveni has called on church leaders to collaborate with the government in spreading the message of income generation and community social transformation, emphasizing that a holistic gospel addresses both spiritual and material well-being. This message was delivered on his behalf by the Minister for Security, Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi, during the closing ceremony of a four-day retreat for the Western Region Church of Uganda Bishops’ Fellowship at Emmanuel Cathedral Kinyasano in North Kigezi Diocese, Rukungiri District.

In his speech, President Museveni highlighted the crucial role of the Church in promoting unity and humanity. He encouraged the bishops to extend their shepherding to encompass economic empowerment, urging them to join efforts to combat poverty, disease, corruption, and moral decline for the betterment of society.

Earlier in the service, Rt. Rev. George Turyasingura, Bishop of East Rwenzori, called upon fellow church leaders to embrace humility and promote forgiveness. He also raised concerns over the impact of technology and the internet on society, describing them as significant contributors to moral decay and urging the Church to address these challenges.

The retreat, which brought together 38 bishops from the 15 dioceses of Western Uganda, including regions of Bunyoro, Rwenzori, Ankole, and Kigezi, concluded with the election of Bishop Onesimus Asiimwe of North Kigezi Diocese as the new chairperson of the fellowship, succeeding Bishop Amos Magezi of North West Ankole Diocese.

Reflecting on the fellowship’s origins in 1976, when four bishops from Rwenzori, Ankole, West Ankole, and Kigezi convened at Lake Nyabihoko in Ntungamo District, the bishops expressed a collective aspiration to develop self-sufficient dioceses. They voiced concerns over dependence on external donations, warning that such reliance could compromise the independence of the Church.
