President Yoweri Museveni has hailed Bweranyangi Girls’ Secondary School in Bushenyi District for its transformative role in the education sector, lauding its contribution to social and economic development in the western region and beyond.

The President’s message was delivered by the Minister for Local Government, Hon. Raphael Magyezi, during the official commissioning of the newly constructed multi-billion St. Paul Chapel at the school premises on Bweranyangi Hill, Bushenyi-Ishaka Municipality.

President Museveni praised the school’s foundation body for integrating mainstream academics with moral and spiritual development, setting it apart from institutions that focus solely on academic performance.

“Some schools have emphasized only academic excellence and have neglected the moral and spiritual part of it. Yet, these are the most important components in life,” Museveni stated in his message.

The President also noted the increasing demand for skilled manpower and emphasized the need for learners to equip themselves with practical skills to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving global economy driven by technology and industrialization.

Representing the Ministry of Education and Sports, Ms. Kedrace Turyagyenda, the Permanent Secretary, reiterated the government’s commitment to overhauling the education sector to better shape the country’s future.

“As a ministry, we are very committed, and we want all other stakeholders to join hands because education is the backbone of any society that aims to grow and prosper,” said Turyagyenda.

Ms. Mary Karooro Okurut, Senior Presidential Advisor on Public Relations and patron of the Bweranyangi Old Girls Association, expressed gratitude to the First Lady, Ms. Janet Museveni, for her continued support towards the school and the education of the girl child.

“We are very proud of Ms. Museveni for her contributions to the education of the girl child,” she said.

Headmistress Molly Buhwairoha welcomed the commissioning of the chapel, noting that it will serve as a spiritual sanctuary to help shape generations of young women into responsible, God-fearing citizens. She also highlighted ongoing challenges such as family-related issues and domestic violence, which continue to impact students’ well-being and academic performance.

Founded in 1912 on Kamukuzi Hill in present-day Mbarara City, Bweranyangi Girls’ Secondary School is one of Uganda’s oldest institutions for girls. After several relocations, the school settled on Bweranyangi Hill in Bushenyi in 1954. In 1960, it was authorized to operate as a middle school offering education from Senior One to Senior Four.

The school has since grown into a respected institution, known not only for academic excellence but also for fostering holistic development among its students.
