Police in Mbarara are hunting for unknown persons who stole a baby girl from Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH) on September 16, about seven days after her birth.
Jean Asingwire reportedly delivered the child by cesarean section at Kinoni Health Centre IV in Rwampara District on September 9, 2022 but was referred to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital after her uterus ruptured.
The MRRH Communications Officer Halison Kagure told our reporter yesterday that, the baby was stolen after Asingwire and her caretaker established a relationship with a stranger while in the maternity ward.
Kagure says on Friday last week that, a female stranger came into the ward and established rapport with Asingwire and her caretaker mother-in-law, identified as Medius Kasande
The stranger tricked them into allowing her to take the child for vaccination at the child clinic in the outpatients department.
Kagure adds that the mother left the baby with her mother-in-law to go and provide the details of the discharge form and that of the baby to the health workers before immunization which gave the stranger a chance to pick the baby from the grandmother and smuggle it out of the hospital.
By close of yesterday, authorities had made no major breakthrough in finding the missing baby.
Three years ago, the health facility recorded a similar incident.
