Police in Katwe Kabatoro Division, Kasese District, are investigating a fatal road accident that occurred on the night of January 15, 2025, along Hamkungu Road within Queen Elizabeth National Park. The incident, which happened at approximately 11:40 PM, involved a motorcycle with registration number UGA 359 D.
According to preliminary reports, the motorcycle, ridden by Asaba, a 19-year-old male, collided with a hippopotamus while traveling at high speed. Tragically, Asaba lost his life on the spot. The passenger, identified as Timothy Tumusime, sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment.
Responders from the Traffic Police of Katwe Kabatoro Division arrived promptly at the scene and transported the deceased to Kasese Health Centre III for a postmortem examination.
Authorities attribute the accident to excessive speed and have urged motorists and drivers traversing national parks to adhere strictly to Uganda Wildlife Authority’s speed limit guidelines. Non-compliance, they warn, will result in arrests and prosecution.
SP Nelson Tumushime, the Rwenzori East Region Police Spokesperson, emphasized the importance of caution, stating: “Drivers and motorcyclists must respect speed limits within the park to avoid such tragic incidents. We remain committed to ensuring safety on these roads.”
Efforts are ongoing to raise awareness and enforce regulations to protect both human and wildlife safety in the area.
