Ntungamo district on Tuesday afternoon rewarded three pupils at the primary school’s national kids athletics competitions held in Luwero district between 7th-16th May this year.
Speaking at the handover of the gifts in Ntungamo district Board Room, Asuman Kigongo, the Ntungamo district vice chairperson, revealed that sports are very vital and must be given priority stressing that the district is committed to securing funds to boost sports in the following subsequent academic years.
Kigongo hailed the 24 athletes for participating in the championship and called upon winners to maintain their positions.
He also personally gifted each pupil with 50,000 shillings, which he revealed was aimed at motivating them and others to embrace sports.
Ntungamo district principal assistant secretary Fidelis Kiiza called on the head teachers to always attach value to sports, saying that they help instill discipline in pupils.
Kiiza noted that sports will help the learners to gain more confidence, exercise, and curb non-communicable diseases.
Ntungamo district education officer Fred Bahati revealed that all the schools in the district must participate in athletics because there is a vote for the co-curricular activities, which must be put to good use.
Bahati threatened to name and shame any school that fails to participate in the sports to penalize their head teachers.
Acting Ntungamo sports officer Elie Muhumuza revealed that the district is making vital steps towards improving sports in schools by encouraging the participation of all.
The chairperson of education and health who is also the councilor for Ruhaama sub-county Ahabwe Bernard Mupenda noted that this will develop the talents of the children which will enable them to earn a living in the future.
Councilor Mupenda hailed the district leadership particularly Asuman Kigongo for revamping the sports in the District.
Each of the pupils was gifted with a brand-new mattress, while the head teachers of their schools were each given a pair of bed sheets.
