The territorial police in Rubanda have apprehended Catherine Kyampeire, a 25-year-old woman, on suspicion of murdering her 4-month-old son, Devine Ainembabazi. Both Catherine and Devine were residents of Mungara cell, Kyenyi parish, Muko sub-county in Rubanda district.

According to reports, on October 5, 2023, around 07:00 pm, at their residence, Kyarisiima Dorotia, who is Catherine’s mother, arrived home and noticed that Catherine was not with her baby. When questioned, Catherine did not provide an answer, leading Kyarisiima to assume that the baby was sleeping.

Later, at approximately 10:00 pm, while Kyarisiima was away on a phone call, she heard the baby crying from the pit latrine. She immediately sought assistance from neighbors, who promptly retrieved the baby from the latrine. Unfortunately, the baby had already passed away.

Kyarisiima herself reported the incident to the authorities, and the scene was subsequently visited and documented. A postmortem examination was conducted at the scene, and the body was then handed over to relatives for burial.

Investigations revealed that Catherine had been receiving treatment for mental illness at Kabale referral hospital for over a decade. Following the incident, she was subjected to a medical examination, which confirmed her mental health condition. She was then entrusted to her relatives with the instruction to ensure she received further medical treatment at the hospital.
