Residents of Ntungamo Cell and Rwanja Trading Centre in Mitooma District, in partnership with local leaders, have expressed frustration over the continued lack of essential social services, particularly electricity and water. They are calling on their leaders to urgently address these concerns.

According to Begumisa Silagi, the LC1 Chairperson of Ntungamo Cell, who spoke to Boona Radio, residents face daily challenges due to the lack of electricity. He said the situation has severely hindered trade and economic development in the area, especially affecting youth employment.

Begumisa explained that economic activities such as welding and other electrical-based trades have failed to take off due to the absence of power. Additionally, the lack of street lighting in Rwanja Trading Centre has led to increased cases of insecurity, including theft and robbery. He mentioned that they currently rely on a single lamp donated by Arthur Kazoora, which, although helpful, remains grossly insufficient.

Two other residents and entrepreneurs, who preferred anonymity, also shared their concerns with Boona Radio. They said their businesses have struggled due to electricity scarcity, often forcing them to travel long distances to urban centers to access power. They emphasized that the challenge is widespread across many parts of Mitooma District.

In addition to electricity issues, they highlighted water scarcity and poor road conditions as major barriers to economic growth and development. They called for immediate intervention from the responsible authorities.

Meanwhile, Ruhinda South Member of Parliament, Hon. Donozio Kahonda, responded to the residents’ concerns, reiterating his previous promises regarding electricity extension. He revealed that a World Bank-funded electricity extension project is ready to begin but is delayed as the government seeks funds to compensate residents whose properties will be affected by the project.

He appealed for patience and faith from the residents, assuring them that leaders are doing their best to ensure the timely delivery of services in the area.
