The territorial police in Kisoro are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of 5-year-old Provia Niyoshuti, a pupil and resident of Bugara village, Gasiza parish, Nyakabande sub-county, Kisoro district.
It is reported that on May 29, 2024, around 15:00 hours, Provia accompanied her mother to visit her grandmother’s home in Kibaya cell. During the visit, she went to the home of a neighbor, Sebazungu, and did not return. Despite extensive searches by her family and local residents, she could not be found.
On May 30, 2024, her family formally reported her disappearance to Kisoro Police Station. The next morning, on May 31, 2024, local residents resumed their search and discovered her body in a polythene sack (kadeyi) dumped in a garden about 15 meters from Sebazungu’s home. The incident was promptly reported to the police.
Police visited and documented the crime scene, collected statements from relevant witnesses, and conducted a postmortem at Kisoro Hospital.
Three suspects have been arrested to assist in the investigation, including Damiano Kabahoze, a teacher who had previously threatened Provia’s father over a land dispute. Sebazungu remains at large. Inquiries are ongoing to determine the motive behind the murder.
