Residents of Kashojwa Parish in Rugyeyo Subcounty, Kanungu District, have expressed deep frustration over the continued lack of electricity in their communities. They say the absence of power is hindering development and limiting business opportunities.

Led by Denis Mugarura, the LC1 Chairperson of Kabungo Cell, and Yusuf Mugarura, the residents noted that the lack of electricity has made it impossible to establish small businesses such as salons, welding workshops, and popcorn production units—all of which require electricity to operate.

They also decried what they called unfair distribution of electricity, pointing out that some neighboring areas in the same parish—such as Kahama, Kyamatwa, Nyamitundami, and Kitugu—have power, while others like Katungu, Kabatwa, Kabahesi, and Nyamakamba remain in darkness. This has left many wondering whether they are considered full citizens of Uganda.

Agaba Kyengoro, the NRM Chairperson of Maronko Cell, noted that during the rainy season, many households are plunged into darkness due to their reliance on candles and solar energy. He added that solar systems are not a viable option for many low-income earners in the area due to their high cost.

While residents appreciated the government’s efforts in improving road infrastructure, they urged leaders to also prioritize addressing the electricity shortage in their communities.

In response, Joseph Akankwasa, the District Councilor representing Rugyeyo Subcounty, acknowledged the challenges faced by residents and assured them that local leaders are working to find a solution. He said the issue has been discussed at several levels and that leaders have already engaged with the Ministry of Energy to push for electricity access in the affected areas.

Government leaders have since announced that there are ongoing plans to extend electricity to all underserved areas beginning in July this year, both within Kanungu District and across the country. Preliminary surveys for electricity distribution have already been conducted in some locations, and residents have been urged to remain patient as implementation begins.
