Residents of Kagaga Cell in Kamahuri Parish, Rugarama North in Ntungamo District, Decry Water Scarcity in Their Area
It is reported that this cell has a large population of people who depend on one shallow well, which is also far from their homes, prompting residents to call on those responsible to provide them with clean water.
Speaking to our reporter, Chairperson LC1 Kagaga Cell, Gaton Yoramu, confirmed the problem of water scarcity, saying they have only one shallow well in their cell, which is used by almost four hundred households. He added that even the available source of water is contaminated.
He further explained that the shallow well is located at a distance, and people walk long distances to get water, calling on the government to provide them with another source of water in the area.
Stanley Turyasiima, a resident of Kagaga Cell, also expressed concern over the problem of water scarcity, saying the water they use is contaminated and shared with animals, exposing them to diseases associated with drinking unclean water.
He further explained how they have been fetching water from dams in people’s farms, which were later fenced off, leaving them helpless. He called for quick intervention.
Richard Warugaba, another resident of the same cell, said the water they use is shared with animals and that it is hard to get clean water, especially after cows and other animals have dirtied it during the rainy season.
He further stated that they reached out to those responsible, but all their efforts have been in vain.
However, speaking to the Chairperson of LC3 Rugarama North, Agaba Ivan Rwanyakyibare said they are aware of the water scarcity in the entire sub-county, except for a few cells where a few boreholes and shallow wells were constructed.
He further confirmed that he has taken the initiative of engaging the government, with the help of their area MP and National Water, to ensure that people have access to clean water.
