Tension has escalated in Kanungu Town Council after cold chain items, including drugs and vaccines, were discovered hidden in the bush near Kanungu Resort Hotel, located in Katate Cell, Kanungu Town Council, Kanungu District.
The medicines, still inside their fridges, were found by Dr. Timothy Tumwesigye, the head of Kanungu Health Centre IV. According to Dr. Tumwesigye, these were the very items that had recently gone missing from the health center during a thorough search by the hospital team.
A joint police team, led by Detective Tumusabe Frances, arrived at the scene with a canine unit to conduct a search. After evaluating the area, they assured the gathered crowd that since the drugs were numbered and their source was known, identifying and arresting the suspects would be straightforward.
Dr. Timothy expressed his shock and dismay that such vandalism could occur within his health facility. He noted that these drugs are strictly prohibited from being sold in any Ugandan market, including pharmacies, clinics, or drugstores.
Olivia Komuhangyi, the LC1 Chairperson for Katate Cell, remarked that the discovery of these drugs left residents worried and questioning why essential medicines were often unavailable at the government hospital, only to be found discarded in the bush.
Dr. Timothy informed the crowd that the cold chain drugs are valued at approximately 17 million Ugandan shillings. These drugs are exported abroad with high security and are crucial government supplies. The recovered items, which include various antigens, oxytocin, and insulin, were taken to Kanungu Central Police Station as evidence.
