Rukungiri Municipality Member of Parliament aspirant Gen. Henry Tumukunde has expressed his solidarity with Ugandans calling for the release of political activist Dr. Kiiza Besigye from jail.

Tumukunde made the remarks on Sunday, June 29, 2025, while addressing Christians at Kashozi Catholic Church, Nyakibale Parish, in Eastern Division, Rukungiri Municipality. He was speaking during a fundraising mass aimed at raising funds for the renovation of the church and the catechist’s residence. The event was held in conjunction with the celebration of the feast of Saints Peter and Paul and the baptism of seven children.

The former security minister said his support stems from concerns raised by an alleged recording that accused Dr. Besigye of plotting to assassinate President Yoweri Museveni. Tumukunde criticized the continued detention of Besigye, whom he described as a national figure deserving respect, especially after his past contributions to the country, including recovering from injuries sustained during past political confrontations.

Former Rukungiri Municipality MP Hon. Rolland Mugume Kaginda also attended the event and commended Deus Kasibayo for leaving behind business commitments to serve the Church. He further urged voters to reject divisive politics and embrace unity.

In her remarks, Hon. Mary Paula Turyahikayo thanked the administrators of Kashozi Catholic Church for organizing a developmental event. She further encouraged women to care for their families and children, and not to waste much of their time waiting for politicians, thereby neglecting their duties at home.

Asiimwe Martin Kyandanda, an official from the Ministry of Water and Environment, encouraged Christians to remain steadfast in their faith and to live by the teachings and traditions of the Church, drawing inspiration from the lives of Saints Peter and Paul.

Rev. Fr. Chrispino Mubangizi, the assistant priest of St. Peter’s Catholic Parish in Buyanja, used his homily to remind believers to remain faithful in both moments of joy and times of hardship.

The chairperson of the organizing committee, Deus Mugarura, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support received and revealed that the fundraising drive had set a target of over UGX 60 million to improve the church’s infrastructure.

By the end of the event, a total of UGX 20,347,900 had been collected in cash, along with 54 bags of cement.
