Learners and teachers at Rwenanura Nursery and Primary School in Nyabitete Parish, Buyanja Sub County, Rukungiri District, are battling stomachaches and other health complications following a deworming vaccination exercise carried out by nurses from Buhandagazi Health Center II on Friday, 11th April 2025.
The affected individuals, who received the vaccination as part of a routine school health program, later complained of severe headaches, vomiting, fever, and stomach pain. While some were treated with first aid at school, others were taken home by concerned parents. Three pupils are currently admitted at Karoli Lwanga Hospital in Nyakibale for further medical attention.
Claire Ainembabazi, a primary three pupil, narrated that she and her classmates were given six tablets without any clear explanation. She said they began experiencing headaches and eye pain shortly after taking the medication.
Shilla Nuwakikunzire, the mother of Aloysius Anyijuka, revealed that her child returned home in a critical state and only recovered after being put on a drip.
Another concerned parent, Aireen Kyarisiima Bibangamba, expressed anxiety over the mounting hospital bills, saying she is financially disadvantaged and struggling to meet the medical expenses.
The head teacher of Rwenanura Nursery and Primary School, Frank Nabaasa, has called on the government to urgently investigate the vaccine and provide answers to the affected families.
Charles Karahukayo, the Nyabitete Parish Councilor, has urged parents to stay calm, noting that relevant authorities have already launched investigations into the incident.
Gloria Musimenta, head of nurses at Buhandagazi Health Center II, attributed the reactions to individual body responses to the vaccine and assured the public that the matter is being reviewed.
Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely as investigations proceed to determine the cause of the adverse reactions and ensure the safety of future school health programs.
