The office of the Rukungiri resident district commissioner has halted a demonstration organized by residents of Kikongi parish in Bwambara sub county Rukungiri district against China Henan International Construction Company that is undertaking the construction of the Kanungu – Rukungiri road, for failing to work on the road drainage system leaving run-off water to destroy their property.

These residents resolved to stage a demonstration after the Uganda national roads authority and the CHICO company ignored   letters   detailing how water from the road had destroyed   gardens, and houses belonging

This forced Rukungiri Deputy RDC Wilberforce Ahimbisibwe Ongom to call a meeting with residents, CHICO staff, UNRA staff and Bwambara local leaders to   address the resident’s concerns.

Ahimbisibwe was concerned that officials from UNRA did not attend the meeting.

Chris Kanganyano the Bwambara subcounty chairperson explains that   whenever it rains, run off water washes away gardens and residents’ risk being hit by famine if no interventions are made

Residents of Kikongi parish whose properties were destroyed now want   CHICO company and UNRA to compensate them because their houses developed cracks which puts their lives at risk

Hao Weidory, the CHICO company road project Manager told residents that they are going to see how residents’ issues can be addressed immediately.

Officials from  CHICO assured residents that they are going to work on some of the  issues raised, including  covering   pits and unblocking the  drainage systems  with immediate effect to prevent  the destruction of peoples’ properties.
