Bushenyi district healthy officer Dr. Edward Mwesigye has warned the people of Bushenyi to intensify the fight against tuberculosis which has emerged as a serious killer disease in the district.
Dr. Mwesigye was speaking during a stakeholders’ regional workshop on advocacy and implementation of tuberculosis and leprosy held at Meridian Hotel in Bushenyi.
He said in Bushenyi alone 34 people had tuberculosis last year with infectious cases reported in sub-counties of Kizinda-Kigoma town council, Kyamuhunga, Kakanju, central division, and Nyabubaare.
Dr Raymond Byaruhanga tuberculosis focal person from the Ministry of Health said the disease has spread rapidly recently in the country with the death toll increasing from 3,100 in 2021- 5000 last year with Kazo district being the most affected district.
Adding that the country is among the most affected countries in the world.
Sheema district chairperson Jemmima Buhanda urged all stakeholders to join the fight against tuberculosis because the disease has killed many Ugandans unknowingly but if all people join hands in its fight the government will achieve its target of a free tuberculosis country by 2030.
She said in her district, Sheema Kitagata and Kashekuro, areas saying those are hotspots and the area receives more people daily.
