Authorities in Buhunga sub-county Rukungiri district are struggling to stop the increasing livestock theft which they say is becoming a big challenge in the area.

According to Benon Mugisha, the Buhunga sub-county chairperson, his office receives not less than five animal theft cases daily which he said has discouraged most of the livestock farmers.

He said that on 10th May this year, they intercepted livestock robbers with 19 stolen goats but later ran away and left the goats which are still in the hands of the sub-county authorities tracing the owners.

Mugisha added that on Thursday this week at midnight, the sub-county security team also intercepted a thief with a stolen cow from Omubugando Mitooma district who also ran away and left the cow.

He has vowed to work with the sub-county security team and other authorities to ensure that the habit is stopped, as most of the farmers are already discouraged.

Benard Gumisiriza the LC3 Councilor for Bwanda parish in Buhunga sub-county said they are worried that there could be an outbreak of livestock-related diseases as many people have started to live with animals in houses to secure them from thieves.

He, therefore, challenged security to revive the culture of making patrols which he said will obstruct thieves who always at night using vehicles to steal people’s livestock.
