Authorities in Buhunga Sub County, Rukungiri District, are struggling to curb the persistent issue of animal theft despite various measures to enhance security in the area.
Benon Mugisha, commonly known as “Aunt,” the LC3 Chairperson of Buhunga Sub County, revealed that the problem has intensified, leading to tragic consequences. He disclosed that on Thursday last week, they buried Kabuyanda Julius, a resident of Kagarama Village in Bwanda Parish, who committed suicide after being intercepted with four stolen cows.
Mugisha attributed the rampant animal theft to individuals in the butchery and livestock business, accusing them of colluding with thieves and exposing farmers to significant losses.
In an interview on November 20, 2024, Mugisha stated that following Kabuyanda’s death, he ordered a temporary suspension of livestock trading in the area to address and combat the theft problem.
This decision prompted livestock traders and related business owners to form a committee to ensure transparency and security in animal transactions. Mugisha said the committee’s mandate includes verifying that all animals traded in the area are obtained legitimately and suspending any traders caught engaging in theft or document forgery.
The newly formed committee, composed of individuals from the livestock trade, is chaired by Robert Turigye, with Tumwijukye Herbert as secretary and Patrick as treasurer, among others.
Speaking to reporters, Turigye stated that they have been working towards eliminating animal theft and expressed gratitude to the LC3 Chairperson for convening the meeting. He pledged to collaborate with fellow committee members to combat theft and prevent traders from engaging in illicit activities that perpetuate the problem.
