The outbreak of anthrax disease in Nyarushanje Sub-county, Rukungiri district, is disrupting preparations for Idd Adhuha celebrations, set to take place tomorrow, 6th June 2025. The ongoing quarantine in Nyabushenyi Parish has made it difficult for some Muslims to observe the traditional practices of the day.

Muslim leader Muhammad Kiranda, the Rukungiri District Deputy Kadh, expressed concern that although Muslims are ready to join the rest of the world in celebrating this important religious occasion, they are frustrated by the quarantine restrictions in Nyabushenyi Parish, Nyarushanje Sub-county.

Kiranda explained that the quarantine threatens their ability to fully observe Idd Adhuha, a day marked by the ritual slaughtering of animals in commemoration of Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son, Isaac.

He noted that restrictions on the movement of animals and animal products have made it difficult for some Muslims to participate in the ritual slaughtering.

In a telephone interview with our reporter, Rukungiri District Veterinary Officer, Dr. Johnson Ninsiima, confirmed the outbreak of anthrax in Nyabushenyi, revealing that four people have died after consuming infected meat.

Kiranda emphasized the spiritual importance of Idd Adhuha, urging all Muslims to celebrate the day joyfully despite the challenges.

He also reminded the faithful of the value of sharing on this occasion, stressing that when a Muslim slaughters an animal, they are encouraged to share the meat with neighbors and friends, in line with the sacrificial teachings of the day.

He added that only specific animals are permitted for slaughter on Idd Adhuha, including goats, sheep, and cattle, and urged Muslims to avoid eating non-permissible foods and drinking prohibited beverages.

He cautioned that Idd Adhuha is not a day for indulgence in alcohol or immoral behavior, but rather a day of prayer, sacrifice, and compassion.
