Fifteen model commercial livestock farmers in Mbarara District have received forage cutter machines under the Agricultural Value Chain Development Project implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries. The initiative aims to enhance animal feed processing and improve livestock productivity, ultimately helping farmers escape poverty.

During the official handover ceremony held at the Mbarara District Headquarters in Bwizibwera-Rutooma Town Council, Kashari South, District Veterinary Officer Dr. Andrew Akashaba noted that the support is part of a broader program that began with the distribution of pasture seeds and fertilizers. He emphasized that while the machines are hosted by individual farmers, they remain government property and must benefit the wider farming community.

“The machines are for communal benefit. Each host farmer will manage the machine, but any farmer in the surrounding community can access it,” Dr. Akashaba stated.

The event was presided over by the Assistant Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Mbarara, David Aijuka, who reinforced the message that the machines are public assets. He urged beneficiaries to form management committees to oversee their proper use and maintenance.

Mbarara District Chairperson Didus Tumwesigye Tabaro encouraged farmers to establish forage cutter committees to ensure effective use and long-term functionality of the equipment.

Meanwhile, District Production Officer Muhwezi Dandus advised farmers to intensify pasture planting, citing land scarcity and climate change as critical challenges affecting livestock feeding. He stressed the importance of proper feeding in boosting milk production and household income.

The intervention is expected to enhance feed availability, improve livestock health, and contribute to economic upliftment for farmers in the region.
